The missing basics is an interesting and exciting concept. It helps us gain the qualities that are missing in typical engineers. Most of the engineers are thorough with the so called basics, ‘math, science, engineering science etc.’ but lack the missing basics i.e. the ability to ask good questions, label different products, decompose big problems into small ones, visualize new things etc. Qualities such as leadership, entrepreneurship, teamwork and brotherhood too are missing from the engineers of today. This is where the idea of ‘the missing basics’ crops in. I feel that the iefx program will not only benefit me academically, it will help me develop a good social and moral character which is needed along with the bookish knowledge.
I feel that I lack a few of ‘the missing basics’ but will surely develop them by the time I become a ‘bookish’ engineer. I need to put in that extra effort which will help me succeed in life as an engineer who knows how to lead, ask questions, label products, how to manipulate the views of other people etc.
I would like to develop the skills of leadership, entrepreneurship and teamwork this semester by participating in the ihouse meetings, mingling with my teammates and working with them to invent new things. This would totally be the joy of engineering, joy of working together, joy of learning and most importantly joy of living.
What do you mean by "...become a ‘bookish’ engineer"?
ReplyDeleteEntrepreneurship is about doing. What do you want to do? What business do you want to start?
I agree with the first and third paragraphs and I too think some people lack some of the Missing Basics. However I believe everyone has these skills but maybe not to the level that they need to be at giving you room to grow. Agreeing with Abi what is a bookish engineer.
ReplyDeleteA bookish engineer is one who just knows his math and physics and lacks the qualities like leadership, entrepreneurship etc.(the missing basics)
ReplyDeleteRight now, i don't know what business i want to start. I guess i will figure that out by the time i graduate.
ReplyDeleteGraduation is only a few years away. It may be a good idea to start brainstorming ideas.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that you know what skills you need to work on shows that you are improving or are getting closer to your goal. Good luck on your journey!
planning ahead is a key to success, and learning new skills is no exception. Also, trying learning leadership in other places. Take authority in RSOs, or in your iHouse. Leadership is very hard, if not impossible, to teach in a classroom alone.
